While a mermaid is a little more far-fetched, I'm not ready to say "no". They say statistically, we only know about 3% of what the ocean contains. Not to mention, if you look at some basic facts, you realize that perhaps we could have over-looked quite a bit.
A couple examples:
- Only last october, did we finally get a picture of a giant squid in its own habitat.
- There is a type of shark called the Goblin Shark. We have known of it's existence for a little over a hundred years now and it's only been spotted about a total of 38 times.
- There is a theory, that the ancient shark known as the Megalodon, which is far larger than a Great White, could possibly still be around, and maybe climate changes in the Earth caused it to have to live deeper in the sea. The reason behind this theory is that Megalodon teeth have been found that have been dated to a time that we had thought the creature to be extinct by then. It's not the strongest theory about the shark, but it is definitely a thinker.
Just a couple of facts and thoughts to mull over.

I think the first legend of mermaids were half mannatee. I dont think that evolution would make that match, and the mermaids never had gills or any other opening to let out the water after they extracted the oxygen from it. But wouldnt that awesome if they did exist!?

Well, let's see. I'm typing at a computer which is right next to a picture by Mark A. Matzke entitled "Neptune's Daughter". Two feet behind me on my headboard/bookcase is an framed image by Margaret Dean entitled "How to Catch a Mermaid." Across my room is a poster entitle "Metamorphisis" by Sheila Wolk. There's two other mermaid pictures framed but not hung by my bookcase. Three Barbie mermaids are leisurely gazing at me from the top of my wardrobe.
Maybe?

No, I don't believe mermen or mermaids ever existed. The popular explanation for this fable is that sailors glimpsed visions of manatees, which, in foggy mists on a mesmerizing sea voyage, can be thought to resemble human beings.

Yes hadleys right.
Mermaids were invented after the first sightings of manatees. I have a few manatees in the canal behind my house here in Florida. They ain't too pretty, and there mighty big, but perhaps not so big as some of the ladies with a few kids I seen down at the local walmart. So I guess if it was a long voyage at sea, any sailor might think one of these sea cows is doable.

I don't. I believe that it is very easy to become lonely at sea, and what else would a boatful of fisherman fantasize about other than a mermaid, half-woman, half-fish! That sounds so typical...

Yes. Why not? Makes life more interisting. Even if they don't exist anymore, who's to say they didn't? For all we know, they may. And so may all the other mythical creatures.
They could even be on an parralel plane...

i do believe there are creatures that resemble humans and fish in one being in the sea. i have seen online, various pictures of these types of creatures. they were petrified in form, and found buy people. i do not know if the still exist, i do believe they have existed at one time. there are many many many creatures of the sea we have not ever seen that exist in the oceans and seas. look at when katrina hit the gulf, there were varous unknown species of fish and other types of sea life washing into the area.
