I know that the USA doesn't really have any traditional clothing, but I really need a "traditional costume" from here. I'd rather it not be something native American or something lame like jeans, but I don't really have any ideas. I was thinking maybe something with a Prairie sort of flare to it might be good, but I'm not sure.

I DON"T want something like uncle sam. I am not dressing up as someone, rather wearing a traditional costume, or outfit. For example, someone from Germany might wear lederhosen or a dirndl. Please serious ideas only. It is for a youth exchange program, and I am from the midwest area, so a praire style might work as well. I'm not sure, please respond if you have some good ideas.

Jeans, a t-shirt and a baseball cap. It doesn't get any more American than that! Jeans are not lame at all when you look at the history. They were created as durable britches for miners during the gold rush and the westward movement used them as standard uniform. If you want to represent the American farmer, overalls or coveralls. Jeans were exclusively American when they first came out.

To me a traditional costume of any nationality should be something that is emblematic of that culture-- something that people will not associate with any other nation. And to me, that is the cowboy in America. The Victorian settler stuff could be an option, but those kinds of clothes were worn by people in many western cultures. The cowboy is an icon of American culture and history, and a look that you see people mimic still today.

America has been inhabited by people from different origins over a period of 400 years. Atleast to symbolise this, it will be wonderful to wear a dress of the original country with Uncle Sam's hat.

I'd go with an old west look. Lace up boots, white shirt, maybe a broomstick skirt or calico patterned long skirt. Cowboy hat. Bet you can find all of that at a Goodwill type store or at a Cracker Barrell. Put your hair in a bun or low ponytail. Sounds fun! Good luck.

When I was in Asia on vacation I was told by New Zealanders, Malays, Japanese, and Taiwanese that Americans could be spotted a Km away by their ball caps, blue jeans, and sneakers.
I know that isn't what you wanted but its a fact.

What about something like scarlett ohara in Gone with the wind?
That would be fun & beautiful too!!! I don't mean her persay, just like a big ball gown with the corsett.. like years ago.
I wish i would have lived back then!!! It would have been awesome to dress like that all the time!!!

We don't have any traiditional clothing? Hmmmmm as a Native American I can tell you that isn't true. However, don't dress up as a Native, we don't use the dress as costumes.

How about a fat suit like the one that Gwenneth Paltrow wore in Shallow Hal.
