Four wheel drive works by engaging the second set of wheels with a seperate drive shaft and gear box.
The idea is that when you're driving two wheels, the power goes to the transmission, then to the drive shaft, then to the wheels.
To engage 4 wheel drive, you use a 'differential', that splits the power between the rear drive shaft and the front one.
There are some pretty cheap setups out there (Chevy Tracker, Suzuki Vitara, Ford Escape, etc) and there are some world-class top of the line ones (Land Rover, Jeep, Chevy Tahoe, etc).

A 4-wheel drive is when you use all 4 wheels on your car, like a 2-wheel drive is when you only use 2 wheels on your car. Not all cars come 4-wheel drive. Like my car gives me an option of 4-wheel or 2-wheel drive. You would use 4-wheel more when you go down dirt roads and up mountains (but you can also use it on the highway and stuff), and then you would use a 2-wheel drive more going down the highway and that sort of thing!

The true four wheel drive has one transmission, two drive shafts, two differentials. The vehicle is moved by both sets of wheels. These are only four wheelers when both differentials are engaged.

4 wheel drive means that both axles are rotating (or all four tires are rotating, however you want to look at it).
there is front wheel drive (only front tires accelerate) which is better for winter drive.
4 wheel drive does consume more fuel though.
