Linux is the best, bar none. It is the most flexible and customizable. You can't use mac OS X or any other mac OS on your computer since it is PC. Windows Vista is going to require upgrades and will put you out alot of money. I say go with a flavor of Linux. www.linux.org

Well, lets get it this way, if you are a beginner, for sure Windows XP-SP2 is the ultimate option. At least, its the easiest in dealing with. If you want more security and a good configuration PC, then wait until Jan 2007 until the launch of Windows Vista.

The Beta2 release is already available for download freely by the public. If you go for it, don't expect to see the best of it...it's still in Beta. I formatted the same day and returned back to my loved WinXP-Pro SP2.

It has a lot of nice features and cool interface with a more security than XP, that could make you really frustrated. In a sense, Administrator users are asked when undertaking some tasks if they want to give that specific task Administrator previllige or not!!!

Other than that, if you are an experienced Linux user, then go for the flavour you prefer. There are two major types of desktop environments (desktop interface), known as KDE and Gnome.

Some Linux OS [Operating System] comes with both and you can shift from one to another by signing out and in again with the different user interface.

Others simply launch a totally different OSes, each with a different UI [User Interface]
Example:
Ubuntu - the Gnome Interface http://www.ubuntu.com/
Kubuntu - the KDE Interface http://www.kubuntu.org/

The good thing about Ubuntu or Kubuntu is that they are willing to ship you the OS right to your home Free-of-Charge!!

There are other destributions of Linux that are perfect. So, really, the best thing to do is to try out as many. Of course downloading, installing and formatting afterwards may be really frustrating, so I personally recommend installing them virtually through VMware Workstation
http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/

To find about Linux destributions, try LinuxISO
http://www.linuxiso.org/
whcih has some of the major Linux destributions.

Also, try Linux.org
http://www.linux.org/dist/
which has most of the Linux destributions, even those that we may have never heard off.

Hope this answers your question...

You may need to do a clean install. XP is a pretty good operating system.

Have you done spy ware and virus scans/ Sometimes Windows takes a hit for factors beyond it's control.

I run a lot of programs, spend a lot of time on the web and do a lot of beta testing. Usually when I have a problem it isn't really the fault of XP.

Which version do you have? Microsoft is coming out with a new OS called Vista within the next 6-9 months.

It could be the age of your system; it may not be able to handle the specs of the verison you have.

there are many questions to ask to find out why it is not working.

Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger is a good solid operating system but it is slightly harder to find software because Microsoft has a near monopoly over software. If you go to your local Apple Store they have tons of software and are happy to help you with your computer questions.

Windows sucks but it's supported by more software, hard to find programs for the other operating systems.

Windows XP is good for people who do not know a lot about computers, but if you are a computer wizard, I recomend Linux.

I have heard Linux is a good system, it is different from Windows and takes a while to work with but is stable.

Be a rebel and get yourself a copy of Linux. Redhat is the best in terms of support.
