I have a mercruiser 120 hp I/O that will not go into reverse. It seems to run ok in forward but when i attempt to engage it will go in. Sometimes when i try to engage the reverse it makes a racheting noise and sounds almost half in. I do not know how to fix it or how to go about diagnosing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me that the linkage needs adjustment. The rattle sound is probably the effect of it not being fully engaged. (gears not fully meshed)

a quick education on boat gearing. If it sounds good in idle and opposite, the forward kit tooth are high quality. The undesirable cable led to slow or incomplete shifting into forward which will have chewed the seize canines tooth off or in all probability broken the lugs on the forward kit. often the seize canines dies first, it quite is a decrease priced area. The exertions is the high priced area. you are going to be able to or won't require a forward kit, observing the wear, however the quite kit tooth might desire to be ok . On all stern tension and outboard drives, the two the forward and opposite gears run all of the time, in opposite guidelines. once you shift, a seize canines, it quite is splined to the prop shaft, strikes back or forth and the two engages with the forward kit or opposite kit. A misadjusted cable or unsuitable shifting techniquie will harm the canines over the years. constantly make brisk shifts to work together the canines with minimum chatter. in case you here grinding once you shift, do no longer permit it choose for long. the two way, you're in for $4 hundred-$six hundred, yet i wished to submit a lesson for each individual else so it is oftentimes prevented. good luck.

I had a similar problem on mine. I found out there is linkage that causes the boat to go in forward, neutral and reverse. You will more than likely have to take it to a marine repair shop. It should not be too much to fix if you don't wait too long and tear something else up using it. Good luck.

An Alpha drive is noisey shifting into reverse.
Check the fluid level in the drive.
Buy the repait manual, They are cheap on ebay and you will need it again later.
