Which train do I take from Tokyo Station to get to Kamakura to visit the Great Buddha? What is the name of the station closest to the main sites in Kamakura?
And I've hear there are good beaches in Kamakura- are they in walking distance from the major sites/JR station?

You take JR Yokosuka-line to get to Kamakura staton from Tokyo station. It takes about one hour.

In Kamakura area, Enoden-line is the best transportation, which is convinient and classical. This train runs and stops main stations for sightseeing spot from Kamakura-station. Of course, you see many famous temples, Buddha and so on.

You might get off Kamakura-station,but threr are fomous temples near the previous station, Kitakamakura-station.
I reccomend that you visit a few temples whike walking to Kamakua-station from Kitakamakura-station.

I recommend the following course.

1. get off Kita-Kamakura-station, JR Yokosuka-line

2. visit famous temples, Enkakuji-ji, Kenchou-ji, Tsuruokahachimangu, Kamakuragu by foot.

3. Go to Kamakura-station by foot.

4. enjoy some spots by Enoden-line from Kamakura-staion.

I'm living in Tolyo, but I've been to Kamakura a few times.
I love Kamakura.

I hope you enjoy !

If you are going from Tokyo station, the best way is to catch the Tokaido line and get off at Fujisawa station. You can catch the Enoden line from there and head to Hase station, the closest station to the Big Budda. Then get back on the Enoden to see some of the best views from a train. This will take you to Kamakura station where you are within walking distance to one of the more acceptable ideas of a beach. It is called Yuigahama.

This beach has fairly clean sand but the water can be a bit gross during the busy summer season. If you want cleaner beaches, you have to head further south to Izu or the other way to Chiba. Please keep in mind that if someone japanese mentioned that the beaches in Kamakura are quite good, it is because they probably haven't been to many beaches outside of the area. If you can deal with the crowds, sticky sand and oily water, then you should be okay. Also be wary that once August arrives, there will be an abundance of jellyfish. At least go to experience it once. Then save your money and take a trip south to Ito. Or really splurge and fly to Okinawa.

Hase is the closest. It's on the Enoshima Dentetsu Line. That line runs between Kamakura itself and Fujisawa, so you just go to one of those stations and change to the Enoshima Dentetsu line. It's not a JR line of course though!

The beaches ARE in walking distance, both from the station and the Buddha.

I hope it helps, but I can't vouch for it as I normally get my husband to search for trains through Yahoo! Japan!

Go to Hase Station. It is a great icon of Japan, but Kamakura has a lot more to offer as well.

BTW there are other great Buddha statues in Japan as well. Everyone knows the one in Nara, at
Todaiji. But did you know that Fukuoka Prefecture has 3 of them?
