i think what's worse is ruining people's life that any shred of joy is gone forever because that would mean they would have to live without anything left for them.

Worse for who?
You can get over ruining a person's life, perhaps make amends. You will have trouble bringign them back to life.
As for the victim, It depend on how much they value their happiness.
As for the relatives, ruining is better than killing.
As for the bistanders, killing is better than ruining because it gets things over with.

Taking someone's life is worse because it forces you to confront your own mortality. But if you are asking which is a worse ordeal for the victim of your action, then of course to live in pain is unpleasant, while death is not unpleasant at all. Some people yearn for death.

The latter thing is impossible. A person can only ruin his or her own life. Anything you might do, no matter how horrible, is not causing their misery – it's only providing an excuse.

Think about it. If you take their life there is nothing else. If you ruin their life, they have the rest of their living to contemplate the why's and why not's of what happened to them. So your revenge is longer lasting.
