I have taken all friends from Spain, Portugal, Germany, Japan, etc to The Barking Crab, a great place right in downtown near the Waterfront, cold beer on tap, picnic tables and a down to earth atmosphere. It is not pretentious or high class, just a summer picnic like place to eat great seafood that won't break the bank. Link is below...enjoy!

The local spots in Rockport and Gloucester are your best bets. Someone mentioned Anthony's Pier 4, while is is a very good spot, I wouldn't say it fits your category.

Gloucester would be better. Find a small place that the natives enjoy. Or try in Rockport.

In Boston, try Jasper White's Summer Shack in Back Bay or Cambridge.

Rockport has the finest seafood around and you can't beat their cheap prices. But bring your own bottle of booze, Rockport is a dry town since the early 1800's.
Enjoy!
