I went to a restaurant today by myself and had lunch, where I spent $14 and tipped $4. Did I over do it? I really felt bad for the server I could tell he was inexperienced was going to have a rough day, so it was a pity tip really. What are your thoughts?

You might have had somebody fresh out of training who's never done this type of work before. Dealing with the public is never easy, and if you are inexperienced that makes it all the harder. I am refreshed thought to see that you had compassion for this guy, which I rarely see anymore, bless your heart! We all have bad days at times right? Sometimes it's hard for people to hide the fact that they are having a rough time, we've all been there. It's customary to leave anywhere from 10 percent...which usually means you had okay service, but you weren't too happy with it all ...anywhere to 20 percent or above. It's all up to the person doing the tipping though. I'm sure the waiter was happy with your tip, but hopefully he'll become a bit better at his job soon. Again...I have to say "Thankyou" to you on his behalf for being so understanding and realizing that we all have our moments. You've got class!

Inexperienced servers need to be tipped accordingly, otherwise you could be encouraging bad service...I've been waiting in a finer dining restaurant for years and strive for at LEAST 20%. I know that I hit all points in service with each table, there are some who know how to tip and some that think $5 on $75 is appropriate. I go out and tip much extra because I know how it is...if the service sucks I'll tip no less than 10%. Some folks out there don't realize that we live off of what they leave us, we only get $2.13 per hour which we don't see due to taxing on our claimed tips. Remember the little guys.

Yes it was nice of you to leave a nice tip, most people go by the stanndard 15 percent which in your case would have been about two dollars. But as A former waitress i say to you "thank you" most people dont realize how low waitress' are paid(about 2 and a half dollars, less in some places) all of our money comes from tips, and two dollars a person doesn't cut it, expecially for people like me who raise a family on that kind of wage. I think your additude was great. You realized that your server was having a bad day, just like any normal person, something more people should realize

Typically, 15% is the standard (in America)--other cultures see it differently. I usually tip at least 20% if I had average service. I will tip much more if the server was exceptional--I worked my way through college serving and bartending so I am sympathetic to these people. They get yelled at by customers daily because of f**k-ups in the kitchen, etc. For a $14 meal I would tip $2.80, but that is just me.

About $2.50 would have been 18%, which is the going rate...though now some restaurants charge 20% auto gratuity on groups. Anyway...I think it's great that you gave him a little boost by giving the extra tip. It tells the server, "Hey, I know you were trying, and it was obvious you're learning your way through this, so good try."

It's called being nice. Unheard of these days.

some times we tip the waiter but he doesn't cook your food he just bring it to you and if the order gets mess up something is not cook properly then we get mad at the server when really the one that mess our order up was the cook well anyways i tip according to the service that the waiter provide to me is her or she makes sure that i have enough water or coke on my glass and makes sure that the food is to my liking and that i don't need any more napkins then i give a 25% tip if you could care less why should i so i give them my 2 cents one time i went to a restaurant with my husband and thew waitress took our order when we got our food there was a bug in my salad like a worm so i didn't touch my food and when she came back she didn't even ask why i didn't touch my food was there something wrong she acted like she was doing me a favor she pick up my plate and gave me the bill you know what i did i wrote her a little advise in the napkin that say try to be a better server and maybe you will not be working it a dump like this so her are my two cents for what its worth. now you tell me what would you have done if you where in my shoes also i told her to wrap and food and to serve it to her mother.

Most of the answers were correct. Do not tip 10%. That's an insult to the server. Especially if they did a good job.
Your $4 was generous, but at least you've learned something here today.

I think that $3-4 is a good tip considering that you paid $14 for a meal, I usually pay $2 for a tip.

$4 is a good tip for a $14 bill. It's around 30%. That would be a large tip for a big bill but for a small bill it's just about right.

17% is superb. I determination between 15% - 20% reckoning on the service. Waiters and waitresses paintings flat out and that i believe they ought to get a good tip even as they make your meal relaxing!

I think $3 would have been more than enough . %15 is supposed to be standard . $3 is about 20% . You tipped more than generously . Smile , you've done a good thing !
