For most people dreams take place when the mind plays on the astral playground. Tidbits tucked away in the subconscious may surface and act themselves out. Memories may take on new turns and twists.
For other people dreams reside on the mental realm. Instead of the fantasy romps, these people spend their sleeping hours problem solving and exploring new concepts. This could be why some people say they will sleep on something before giving an answer. Their mind works things out as they sleep and they awake with the solution.

this was a secret government project in the 30s and really became widespread in the 40s as a weapon of war-it was a masterful program designed to attack the Germans and Japanese while they slept creating such fear and terror they couldn't function. Their was a hug massive gas leak and the world became infected, fortunately it was perfected so nightmares are infrequent. before this period, people had no dreams whatsoever which is why the world was only black and white and was very dull and drab until the Great God Ted Turner colorized the whole world.

Dreaming is a kind of thinking, except that it's passive (isn't driven by the will) and irrational (doesn't obey the rules of reason). Dreaming is a lot like imagination - it takes ideas apart and puts them back together in weird or unfamiliar combinations (except, again, it isn't driven by the will). What is it driven by, then? By the emotions: - fears, desires, etc. So, to answer your question, dreams come from our emotions, mainly.

During the period of sleep during which you dream is refered to as REM sleep, and dreams are the result of all the images, thoughts and data you've absorbed during the day being transfered from the short term memory of your brain to the long term area.

They come from your subconscious processing information while you sleep. That information could be problems, wishes, fantasies, or anything that crosses your mind.
