I usually move somewhere because of employment ... I think you choice would depend on your job.

Not really South but more Central ...The San Luis Obispo area is very nice. Lots of towns around it and close to the ocean.

You may have to venture to one of the Valley's. IE: San Fernando, Simi, Santa Clarita, Antelope, etc, etc. More suburban than inner city LA. Generally feels safer. You would do well to do PLENTY of research into this before you make a big move. Sadly, when people find a place they can afford but don't really know the area very well, it can be hard to get out. It is hard to keep moving around - esp. when you have two kids. I lived in the San Fernando Valley for a while - in Woodland Hills. With two very young kids (newborn & 17 month old) We liked it a lot. Price was reasonable there. You will not find cheap cheap cheap really anywhere out there. One cost savings is that you won't have to buy quite so many clothes for the kids because there are not drastically different seasons like on the East coast. No snow suits, etc., to buy. Best of luck to you and your kids.

BTW: We left after a big earthquake. It only took one for me to high-tail it!! No amount of beautiful scenery, sunshine, coastline, etc, was enough for me to risk that again!!! Something to consider. Check out some other states before you take the plunge!!

There is no 100% safe no matter where you go, but a lot of the El Cajon area is safe for families, and it's affordable. There is Santee wich is border line with El Cajon. La Mesa it's a little higher in cost and safer too. All will depend on where your work is located as well. I don't know your exact whereabouts in southern CA, there are so many more areas like orange county, LA.......

Karen,

The only areas that are cheap in Southern CA will initiate your kids into a gang before you unpack your boxes. Their new lullaby will be the sound of ghetto birds and gun shots.

Well for one thing it is expensive all over unless u live in the slum of Cali. and it is also full of gangs. not a good place to raise kids. You probably have to work a couple of jobs to make ends meet. Not a good ideal. And jobs are hard to find unless you have a collage education.

In all seriousness, I don't recommend moving to California at all. The cost of living is high.

I live in San Diego. I wouldn't leave this place for anything. It kinda depends on your idea of cheap. Leave details of what you can afford and I'll give you some examples of rents and stuff. :)
