My husband is several years older than me and he swears to god that there was a television show called "H&R Puffnstuff". Did this show really exist or was my husband puffin' stuff?

Yes Virginia, there was an HR Pufnstuf created by Sid and Marty Krofft.
They also did Lidsville,
Sigmund and the Sea Monsters
Land of the Lost
The Bugaloos
The Lost Saucer
Far Out Space Nuts
Krofft Supershow
They had 17 kid's shows in the 60's and 70's

Oh yeah, I remember H & R Puffenstuff. I even had the album and used to sing along with Witchy-Poo to "Different". I sang it at camp several years later and as a result was assiduously shunned for the rest of the week by the other children.

Absolutely. Puffenstuff was a large orange dragon that walked around in little boots. His friend was Jimmy and they were after the golden flute from Witchie Poo.
"Oh, no Puffenstuff. Witchie Poo's got the golden flute. What are we going to do, Puffenstuff?"
"Now, Jimmy. Just hold on."
