There is no cut and dry answer because there are two schools of thought and both are correct.
1.) If you leave your computer on all the time it holds heat. Heat of any sort is bad for your computer, thats why all the fans in the faster computers.
2.) If you turn on and off your computer everytime you use it, the changing of hot and cold air tempeture will possibly squeeze out (gradually) your memory, video card and any other press in circuitboard causing problems. Now days with the locks on memory boards and video cards, that problem has been all but eliminated.
Also the reboot is hard on your hard drive and other periphrials.
In my opinion, unless you are on broadband internet service and have no antivirus, you should leave it on. I do and have had no problems whatsoever with crashing or ID theft.

I have an inexpensive Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop that's about a year old. The only time I've turned it off was about 8 months ago to upgrade the RAM. Otherwise, it's been on 24/7. I've had no problems. The only thing extra I've done is to have it sit on an Antec cooling pad.

Leaving it on is better for the hard drive, because it doesn't have to be shut off and on again and again. However, modern hard drives last for years anyway, so I'd turn it off since it uses less power.

I don't pay your electric bill, so you have to decide for yourself. But computers don't use much power anyway.
I fix computers, an I believe they run better when you leave them on all the time. Cycling them on and off is harder on them than leaving them on.
All my computers are on all the time. Of course, I give them something to work on. Whie I sleep, they are looking for a cure for a terrible disease called tuberous sclerosis.

It is better if you log off but if you are gone for several days you should shut it off. Shutting it down completely makes it slower.
