Gladiator:
This is wonderful storytelling. The opening Battle Scene simply mesmerizes, showing the brutal nature of combat for Roman conquests. I went back to see the film again. The first time I didn't hear anything Crowe said before the battle. I was just too visually caught-up. The second time I listened very closely and caught the wise yet succinct line from Maximus "what we do in life... echoes in eternity." Awesome.
A simple man v. an emperor. I just loved the resilience Maximus showed throughout the movie. I find in most movies, there is an irritatingly slow process where the character has to "find himself," not so with Gladiator. Maximus does what is needed.
I liked how there were only two or three issues within this film. One was the afterlife. Aspects of the afterlife are opened, but not overdone. Love of family is given sizable focus. I liked the theme of love of country that we see as well, although it may not be justly deserved, it is never questioned.
The visual effects were amazing. It actually had me wanting to believe that's the way Rome actually looked in all it's glory. The battle of Carthage reenactment was really great.
Private Ryan:
Pvt. Ryan was fiction but it was pretty good HISTORICAL fiction. The details were well thought out and based on reality. Rommel DID blunder in his placement of force, The high command DID think Calais was going to be the invasion spot, not Normandy. Hitler didn't wake up until noon on that day and his aides were afraid to wake him. The Rangers did come in right behind the first wave and did take a beach exit by sheer will to get the hell off the beach. The bluffs were the scene of heavy close fighting. The german defenders were mostly Eastern European conscripts from defeated areas. (note that the 2 men that tried to surrender were NOT speaking German). There WAS a young man rescued from interior Normandy after his brothers were all killed. He WAS an airborne trooper (the difference was that he was found by a chaplain and was removed from the front.)
Titanic (1997)
Its name stirs the imagination... Titanic. The unsinkable ship. The unimaginable catastrophe. The untold stories that lay in mystery two and a half miles beneath the waves of the North Atlantic. What buried tale of love, bravery, treasure and treachery, hidden by time and tragedy, waits here to be discovered? A beautiful socialite. A penniless artist. A priceless diamond. A romance so passionate that nothing on earth could stop it. A destiny so incredible that no one could have imagined it. A collision of lives that could only have happened on Titanic, the ship of dreams. The secrets are about to unfold...

1) I think Saving Private Ryan was a terrific movie. For the first time, a new generation of Americans saw the horror of WWII. Over the years, this war above all other US wars had been glamorized both in other movies and in literature. The first 15 minutes of this film (the battle scene) were some of the most intense, incredible ever shown in an American movie-- and I think they were important.
2) Gladiator was a very entertaining film. I think it was a little over-rated, but Russell Crowe was terrific, and the theme of redemption was well articulated.
3) Titantic was no mental masterpiece, but it did a very good job of what it wanted to do... be a tear-jerker with great special effects. The movie has earned almost $2 billion worldwide, and you can't argue that Jim Cameron hit the nail on the head for giving his target audience what they wanted. From a critical point of view, this is the weakest of these three films... but it is the most commercially successful film of all time, and that counts for something (for some people, that counts for everything).
All in all, these are all good to great films.

Saving Private Ryan was an incredible movie; I think it showed what war was/is like and that sacrifice is a noble thing sometimes. Tom Hanks is a brilliant actor and pretty much anything he touches is golden.
Gladiator was rather long and sweeping in its epic storytelling. I did think Russell Crowe gave a solid performace as Maximus, although Im not a particularly big fan of his. Joaquin Phoenix was believable as the bad guy but his incestuous love for his sister was a little creepy and put an odd slant on the movie for me.
Titanic was a great as well; I thought the tragedy of that great ship sinking was brought to the big screen amazingly by James Cameron and the cast. I did think they could have chosen a better actor to play Jack, as I think Leonardo DiCaprio seems to boyish in looks, speech, mannerisms and acting to play the part of a manly hero but he did a fair job. Billy Zane is pretty good at playing the bad guy in this one. I did like how they showed the way the first class and lower class traveled and lived on board and how they were treated when tragedy struck. The part where the Irish family is praying as they are stuck down below is just heart breaking and makes you wonder how many died that way.

I could write 2000 words on each. I won't.
Saving Private Ryan - easily the best war film I have ever seen. After the D-Day Invasion sequence, the cast could have been sitting around reading the Wall Street Journal for the next 2 1/2hours. I wouldn't have cared. Great performances alla round but significantly amazing debuts by Vin Deisel and Barry Pepper. An emotionally wrenching film, but important. This film de-glorifies WWII and shows the sheer brutality of it for what I felt was the first time.
Gladiator - Although I was stunned by it when it when first came out, I feel that it has lost just a tinybit of its lustre in the years since. Great performances by Russell Crowe and Jaoquin Phoenix. A little muddy at times, story wise, but the action never fails to disappoint.
Titanic - Of all the big event films in the last year this one is in dire need of rethinking. When I first saw it I was BLOWN AWAY by the whole thing. Now, after seeing it over 7 times, I have come to realize that the story is awful and the only real reason to watch it is for the last 90 minutes of the ship sinking. I will even be so brave as to say I thought Pear Harbor was BETTER. Yup. You heard me. I said it. What are you gonna do about it? Titanic inspired a legion of young impressionable teenage girls to cheat on the boyfriends with losers. At least in Pearl Harbor, they thought her man was dead and they waited six months before they did anything about it (plus Kate Becksinsale is FAR hotter than Kate Winslet).
I could go on...but I won't. I think I heard the massive sound of web page clicking when I said the words "Pearl" and "Harbor".

Saving private was too much hype and not enough good film. people think if t=you put Speilbergs name on it that is some amazing film-it's not. A better war film that cam out at the same time is Thin Red Line by Terrence malick.
Gladiator was decent. Good action, good acting, decent story. It worked on all levls.
Tiatnic was good. It's a romance and that's what you have to remember. Don't expect much from the dialogue. The effects are great, the detail amazing, and the acting good.

It's been some time ago that I saw these three movies, but I do recall enjoying them all. I believe the gladiator story was the most engaging. Titantic was a beautiful movie to look at, costumes, and all. Saving Private Ryan was pretty intense, but people need to be reminded how hellish war it. All in all, you have asked about three excellent movies.

Lets see, Saving Private Ryan was good, but a little over rated. I thaought it was too long but it did have a good point. Gladiator was probably one of the best epics of that era that we will ever see. You'll notice that Alexander and Troy were good, but still did not over-top it. Finally, Titanic. Good overall story, great ending, but yet another example why movies should not exeed a certain budget.
