We spank our kids but at wat point should we stop?

we give our kids a few smacks on the bare bottom but our oldest is 16 and it still seems to be affective. but is happening less

Spanking into the teens isn't illegal and when spanking was the norm it was not unusual to spank through high school age. I'm guessing though that to warrant a spanking at 16 one would have to do more than be a little past curfew though. The older a child is the more out of line the behavior would have to be to merit a spanking. My last spanking was at 15 but my folks weren't abusive about it... they just gave spankings. Dad would just give us a few swats on the bottom, it was mom who would give us "real" spankings (it was just 5 girls so dad let mom handle the physical discipline).

I'd say by 14 or so the spankings should end except for severe breaches of discipline.

Well I was never bear bottom spanked. I had my clothes on, but it was witha belt. And I'm not messed up.
At 16, it's ineffective. Your kid is too old for it to hurt anymore, so if they can do anything bad and just get a few light slaps, they don't really have any reason to not be bad.
When my mother spanks my 15 year old, almost 16 year old sister, it's just silly. My sister laughs the whole time. It's completely ineffective. If you ground her though or take away her cell phone, that works.
I think you should stop when your kid turns 11. At that point it's pretty much ineffective.

Start winding down & finding other alternatives around 11 or 12. They are more logical at that age & other punishments are more effective. I personally think that some kids, not every kid needs to be spanked once in awhile. It shouldn't be the only option used, but I believe it is a viable option.

When it gets out of control. A spanking should be one or two pats on the bottom. And used more as a warning type thing not as the primary or only type of discipline.
When you are hitting for little or no reason.
When you are doing it just to hurt.
When you feel like you can not control the spanking and just do it.
When it is on other parts of the body.
When it is leaving marks.

All you are doing is teaching them to hit.I never found spanking to be effective.I take stuff away and act calmly no matter what...I set the tone for the whole household in that way and dont have alot of trouble from the kids.

U should stop when they r preteeen to teen years(11-13) cuz in these years u should b able 2 have more serious conversations w/ them n they will better understand what they have done wrong n another punishment should b put in place.

I'm a freshman in high school and i still get spanked. my dad paddles me on my boxers, but if he's not around, they my oldest brother (in college) will spank me bare. i have straight A's, play 3 sports, in marching band, and student government.

My parents stopped spanking me when I was preteen. Then they grounded me when I got in trouble or I get chewed out or lectured. Kids hate lectures or at least I do.
