It might be the Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka.
Or it might be The Jolly Postman (there are several in the series) by Allan Ahlberg.

There is a FANTASTIC comic series by Bill Willingham called "Fables" that combines every character from every classic story and puts them in a modern universe. Wonderful writing and gorgeous artwork, it's worth checking out if you like slightly twisted fairy tales.

There is a great play that uses that premise. It's called, "Into the Woods." It's really funny.
