yes they do seem to think scotland is part of england, wales is part of england, and that ireland is one large country called ireland. but then they also call us europe. you gotta understand though that the US is vast, with so many states with their own laws which make them like mini countries, they have differing time zones to deal with, they are a huge europe of their own. so really why would they be expected to know any different. i don't know the differences of their continent and we brits probably say a lot of things that annoy them too. i remember a grman man have a go at an american for asking him what his zip code was. he really gave him what for. but why would the guy know that they call them postcodes. he called the american parocial. we can all be that.

anyway scotland is a different country from england, it has very different laws. it's about time england woke up to the political agenda the scots have for taking over the british parliament/political front. ask yourselves why scots members of parliament can vote for what happens in england, but english politicians can't vote for what happens in scotland. tam dalyell even spelt it out, even he can't understand it. everyone is being hoodwinked.

I am English but I do tend to think that it's a touch hypocritical and actually a bit arrogant of some Brits to think that Americans SHOULD know the geography of their beloved United Kingdom.

How many Brits know the geography of the US? How many can point to Washington DC on a map? Come to think of it, how many can find Japan, or Portugal, or Iran? - probably a higher percentage than that of the US granted but still, many many English are just as pig-ignorant about the rest of the world.

NOT ALL Americans do this.

You must not tar everyone with the same brush.

I'm English, but I've been to America several times and to different States and they are not as ignorant as some people like to believe. Its just nonsense.

Some BRITISH people do not realise that Canada is not only NOT AMERICAN but that it is part of the Commonwealth.

Because generally Americans know little or nothing about what goes on outside their own country. This is either because (a) they are too stupid, (b) they are too lazy to learn, or (c) they are pig-ignorant and think that they're the most important people in the world, and therefore anything that happens outside the USA is irrelevant.

It isnt "the americans" that do that. It may be some americans. I think most know the difference. If you are referring to people on yahoo answers, it is probably because most of them aren't out of high school yet.
