A volt meter will tell you the potential voltage of the batter, should read at 12.6 - 12.7 volts when battery is fully charged. Unfortunately, this meter will also read about the same when there is 3/4 charge, even 1/2 charge. You do not see a decrease in voltage until the battery is all but dead. During charging, the meter will read between 14.2 and 14. 8 volts. An Ampmeter would be connected in SERIES witht the main cable from the battery to tell you current draw at any one time. The Voltmeter connects across the terminals, + to +, - to - . If you install an Ampmeter, make sure you note polarity of the meter. Good luck

Yeap, It's a voltmeter. A battery is considered dead when it has discharged 50% of it's capacity. That would be when the voltmeter show dropping to of below 10.75 volts
