I have had betta fish for years. You cannot put male and female together unless you want your female either dead or seriously injured; and of couse you cannot put in another male. Like someone said, do not place the bowl near a mirror; this is because they think there reflection is another male to fight with, and they will get very aggressive and bang into the sides of their bowl, or even jump out!

They can go in with other community fish, we had them with clown laches and zebra and leopard danios. Plecos, neons and platies can also be considered. Look up any more info you need on a fish site online, and ask a knowledgable staff member at the pet store when you go to choose your fish. Just make sure not to overstock your tank, too, as Bettas are a slower fish and need to have a chance at the food.

I assume you are talking about a betta? If so, a betta in a 5 or 10 gallon tank may have some companions. Some freshwater shrimp and pygmy cories are fine. Only pygmies though. Most others get too large

By the way, they are siamese fighting fish, so no other bettas, not even females, or even fancy guppies.

Betta....
Anyway, I wouldn't put anything in with them. Your local pet store should be able to tell you what would be safe, but I haven't had any luck. The males are particularly territorial and will kill another male. The females are docile and get along well with any fish with the same temperment. I have seen my females nip at the tails of fancier fish like guppies. I know that both sexes want to be the "prettiest" in the tank.

Betta fish are sharks. They are loners. My son once had one of those fish that hang on the side of the tank eating scum for about 6 months before he was eaten by the shark, but really they are happy alone. They like when you talk to them before feeding them. Mine wags her tail!

beta fish can live with gold fish quite well though they are happiest solo, one thing you never do though is put another beta fish in. They're called Japanese fighting fish for a reason...

Nothing except communal fish like tetras and mollies will live with a beta; they are born to-the-death fighters. If you doubt this, hold a mirror up to his bowl and watch him puff up and attack his own reflection!

you can put other community fish w/ a betta. Just make sure they don't have big, fancy fins. The betta will attack anything with large flowy fins. No female bettas either.

You can't have another fish with a beta. Unless their's a divider.
