I hate to be rude but I am 13 and have cell phone and I DON'T scratch it, I NEVER lost any phones that I have had, NEVER went over my minutes (on a family plan). Also, kids today go out with their friends a lot. I think it is necessary. My 3rd grade cousin has a firefly and does NOT abuse it. My cousin is my age and does NOT treat it badly either. When you give a kid a phone, they're not going to throw it and stuff b/c it's the one thing that most kids want. That's why they make CASES. I have to agree, some kids do loose it but they don't treat phones like crap on purpose! Right now my Verizon LG VX 5200 is on my desk and has not had a call in 2 hours.

Get them a minute phone and make sure they tell u if they need minutes. It is the cheapest way because u do not have a contract. If u want the family plan it might be cheaper but u would have to look into it. Kids should have a way to contact you at all times so i am all for a kid at any age to have one. As long as they use it properly and it doesnt end up costing an arm and a leg.

I think that its a great idea as long as the kids are responsible. That way they can be reached anytime.Cingular has the Firefly & Verizon has the Migo.Unless the kids are around 11-13, cause a regular phone would be good for them.

as long as they can only call parents and old enough and understand how to call the police and no others!!! and not in school that is the time for learning and not talking on the phone.. i say let them have one if the parents feel they need to keep track of the children i understand they have new phones out that only link to parents and police. i think it's a great idea they say parents do not know what their children are doing or who they are with this gives them the contact with the child.

Verizon has a phone called a Miggo that can be added onto a family plan and they can use your minutes. If the child has activities that they are away from you i.e. Soccer Practice I believe 101% that they should have a phone for emergency purposes.

No one needs a cell phone before they're 30. That's about the time that humans begin to develop the ability to form a coherent thought.

Just my opinion.

I gave my son a cell phone in exchange for him mowing the lawn. He loves it and likes to cut the grass, so it works for us. It's also good for other reasons.... keeping tabs on a teenager can be hard at times.

i think its a bad idea, and heres why:

1. They'll treat the phone like a toy and throw it and scratch it and dent it and eventually lose it.
2. they dont understand that you have a certain amount of minuites and they'll just call someone and talk and talk.
3. who the hell are they going to call? besides their parents. its not like they have an active social life and they always go out.

it depends on the age of the child,so this is hard to answer.
i think that when they are able to pay part of the cost of the phone is an appropriate time!
