I don't think it's "stupid" but you may want to try a different approach. Most people are not comfortable with other people saying random things to them especially something socially unacceptable such as what you mentioned. I woudl just say hello or hi to people to be friendly.

Yes! I hate when people just go up to me that I dont know and act stupid, just so that they can impress their friends and letting them think how cool and far out he is for doing that. I would have no problem with someone coming up to me and just introducing themselves and talking, but dont waste my time with your incompetence. ( i probably didnt spell that right which shows a little hypsocrisy). I love meeting new people, but if you have no interest in carrying a civilized conversation with me, then grow up! Thats so middle school.

nope the more confused or creeped out look on their face the better. sometimes i say im gay just to scare ppl and masage their solders for them for like two second. try and get pictures of their faces and keep a photo album with a brief description of what u did.
