male hormone "testosterone" is to blame for this. men and boys have more than women usually. Ocassionally you find a woman that has a small beard and has to shave or wax it off. They tend to have more male like features thus testosterone levels in them are high too.

Testosterone is a male hormone that makes hair grow when the body has a natural cycle gooing on. the hormone allows for a man/boy to get hair and thicker than a woman's or appear for example with longer thicker eye lashes in a boy or man. The timing of testosterone released in the body is important too. Age and other factors can have different results on people and the testosterone hormone.

In general during puberty boys get an extra testosterone release and grow thicker hair. Whether its th eyelashes or beard depends on their ancestors and their gene pool, which dictates how they will look, what type of hair they will grow etc.

I've heard it's mascara, but it's probably also genes. My adopted cousins, one boy, one girl have the longest, most beautiful lashes I have ever seen. The girl is too young to use mascara, and kind of off (long story) so she probably never will.
I don't use mascara, except for maybe once every other year or so, but none of my family has really spectacular lashes. I've always had eyelashes with a really nice curl though, and a bit longer than the average.
My neice is too young to use mascara (4) and her eyelashes aren't long either. Her mother's aren't. So I would say it's mostly genes.

I think boys and girls have very similar lashes until girls start using mascara. Mascara is simply not good for lashes and the use of it along with eyelash curlers causes lashes to break and fall out.

I used to have plenty , long lashes until I started using mascara 12 years ago. Mascara and eyelash curlers actually weaken lashes causing them to break and fall out easily. Now, I only used mascara on special occassions.

I don't know for sure.maybe Hormones
But I'm thinking the genetics play a part.

Although think of it like this boys tend have alot more hair on their body.

Argh. I would trade away my long eyelashes in a second. They are amazingly annoying. As to why, I'm not entirely sure. It's probably something to do with genetics and such.
