4 drinks a week is usually harmless if spread out over the week
Beyond that point research show that it is possible to see damage to the body. So don't overdo it.

I don't know what's normal. But I'm American and I'll tell you what I do and then if enough Americans tell you what they do maybe you can picture some sort of average. Here goes: I have about a 1/2 glass of wine most evenings. Sometimes I have a margarita or beer on Friday night. My husband has no alcohol during the week but sometimes he has a drink on Friday night with me.

There is no set average, because many people abstain, many others more than make up for it.
That said, judge not lest ye be judged.
Don't judge me till you've walked a day in my mocassins!
My lawyer said you're not an alcoholic until you break the law!
Only the person doing the drinking has the priviledge of determining if they are an alcoholic.

I don't drink so for me it would be zero. My husband may have 1-2 beers per month.
Everybody is different - there is no average American. You should try to narrow your question by age range. That'll probably make a big difference.
