read this (fascinating) article. am i missing something? tell me how everyone on earth has a common ancestor when there are tribes deep in the amazon rainforest that have never made contact with the outside world? is it simply a thoeretical mathematical exercise?

Just cause they have never had contact with the outside world does not mean they have always been there. Just think about Native Americans and how rapidly they populated the Americas after they crossed the Bering land bridge. They all came from the same place (Asia) but eventually they got so spread out that some groups were completely disconnected from one another and might as well have never met. Now, apply this to the world and voila!

I heard it once said, that from Adam and Eve, we all came, and it can be proven mathematically, to date. So, we are all cousins, I suppose.
