ACLU defends child molesters and people who protest at dead soldiers funerals. They are awful, many democrats can't stand them either. They are a bunch of corrupted people.
and to the guy that posted two posts above me-- should we give the minoritys special rights?? I don't understnad. When people make fun of islam or any minority religion (besides Judaisim) the ACLU is mad. But when people make fun of Jesus (showing Jesus in sexual scenes on a college newspaper) they defend that person..
They are hypocrites. Just like the time when the ACLU said "It doesn't matter if it offends the majority".
Sorry but I believe in true equal rights. I belive Native americans, African americans, european americans (whites), etc.. should have ALL equal rights. No more giving special oppurtunities to minoritys. That is going against Martin Luther King's dream. MLK wanted us to be equal. Things like hate crimes just divide us and putting people into special groups.
Like if someone spray paints a swastika on a jewish man's car-- that should be vandalism but shouldn't be a hate crime.
Or if a black man punches a white man becuse he was white-- that should be assault-- shouldn't be a hate crime
I just think that the ACLU is trying to overprotect the minoritys, but in their own hearts they could care less if they dropped dead. The ACLU just sues people and collects the money. How is that fair?
"Standing up for rights is against the American way? wtf dude?"
They don't stand up for american rights. Rad a little about them. They supported a group called "God Hates F*gs" who protest at dead soldiers funerals. They only defend the minoritys' rights but could care less about the majority.
Anyways, go to this site: www.stoptheaclu.org lots of info

I have a coffee cup that reads "ACLU: America's Communist Lobby Union".
I wish they'd just go away. 'Nuff said.
A B - Nice, one-sided, holier-than-thou attitude to take. They ARE NOT by definition on the side of civil liberties - just because civil liberties is in their name as you imply. Civil liberties are ALWAYS granted on the premise that they do no others harm. The ACLU time and time again side with the criminal and the hatemonger regardless of the harm it will do to the victim, victims or society in general.
I'd also like to compliment you on a brand new low ... namely that if you do not "value" civil liberties, you are probably against the ACLU. I would argue my case - predicated on the statement above - that those who love civil liberties will often find themselves at odds with the ACLU.
One or two ignorant statements from you will not unravel the truth. You need to do some serious research on civil liberties and what they really mean. For instance, are you aware that the First Amendment does not guarantee unrestricted free speech? There are always cases in which free speech IS restricted - government employees cannot freely speak about many programs, you cannot yell, "Fire!" in a crowded theater, etc.
Even the Dixie Chicks SHOULD have learned that there are consequences to things you might say. Sadly, they didn't and are running around saying their freedom of speech has been violated - it hasn't. The government did nothing regarding their statement, but millions of Americans did. They exercised their freedom of speech by boycotting their music.
Like I said, do some independent, realistic research instead of just parroting what you read in the New York Times.

They are on the side of the Constitution, which provides protections for minority Americans, be they the minority that commits crimes, the minority by virtue of the opinions they express, the minority by virtue of the color of their skin or their sexual orientation, or any other reason. The ACLU -- obviously without your knowledge -- provides important protections for you, should you ever be in the minority and up against a majority intent on violating your civil rights. By virtue of their actions on behalf of those not in power, it might seem that they are always on the "wrong" side of an issue. But rest assured, the ACLU is one of the most important private legal associations benefitting every American's right to live free under that wonderful Constitution of ours. Be thankful you have never needed the services of the ACLU, but don't impugn the work they do. P.S. -- The "American way of life" allows for minority dissent, unlike in other places where dissent often gets you imprisoned or executed. In that sense, the ACLU is the epitome of the American "way of life."

That's just your opinion.
The ACLU is trying to make sure that the Constitution stands for all people and not just the ones that you agree with. For example, I think the Ku Klux Klan are a bunch of idiots, but they are guaranteed free speech as per the Bill of Rights. We can't just say some people have the protection of the Constitution - it has to be for everyone.

The ACLU only takes on issues that are profitable and not important. Prayer, Christmas scenes etc.
When your rights are abused by the IRS where are they?

why is it that many conservatives say they support "freedom and the American way"... but as soon as someone's "freedoms" may have been trampled on... they are the first to tell the person to stop "rocking the boat/complaining" and to trample all over someones freedoms willingly?
It you talk the talk, walk the walk... it's the American way, everyone has rights... if you don't like it, Mexico is to the south, Canada is to the north...
DOES ANY CONSERVATIVE HAVE ANY CONCEPT OF HISTORY AND DICTATORSHIPS?
DICTATORSHIPS DON'T START OUT BY DEFENDING PEOPLE'S RIGHTS, THEY START OUT BY DENYING THEM... YET THEY ARE THE FIRST TO BACK THESE ACTIONS?

They stand up for the rights of everyone. Criminals do have rights, too in this country. Like it or not, that is the way it is.

Because they are, by definition, always on the side of civil liberty. If you do not value civil liberty highly, you will usually be against them on most issues, because there is a price for liberty.

They stand up for rights as they see it. Doesn't mean they stand up for what is wrong or right...just that they take a position and then go after it.

Equal treatment under the law. Free speech not only covers the speech we like, but the speech we don't like.
