The question--i think--is supposed to go like this:

"if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it does it still make a _noise_?"

Accent on 'noise'. Yes it makes a sound, because sound is vibration. But that's not how the q is supposed to go. It's about 'noise.' Noise is a human interpretation of sound. 'Noise', 'pleasant', 'music'... all interpretations/judgements of sound. If no one is there to make the _judgement_ about 'noise', then no, it makes no noise. But yes on the sound.

A sound is only a sound when it is processed by an auditory sensor. In plain English, when something or someone "hears" it. Until that point, it is simply a series of compressions and expansions in the air around the source.

This is an age old question, a variation on the old question, if the pope sh-ts in the woods and there is no one around to smell it does it still stinketh.
The answer is no because the pope is infallible.
I hope this clears things up a bit.

I'll place a tape recorder in the woods and the next time I notice a tree down I'll rewind the recorder and listen to it .I'll be the only one who can correctly answer this age old question with certainty . HEY I"LL BE FAMOUS !

actually it was heard..even if it was like thousands of miles from people..the sounds waves went out..and are still going out...
now as for anyones brain recognizing it that is different..
but yes it made a sound even if un recognizable..unless all humans and such are traveling away from the sounds waves at at faster rate than sound...which would mean everyone is flying fast through the vast universe...
