the first answer is right; if you use google and type in Glomar Explorer or Project Jennifer you'll get a wealth of information on the CIA using Howard Hughes as a cover to raise the wreck of a Soviet missile sub from 2 miles down in the Pacific..........incidentally, a new book, Red Star Rouge has as its premise that the sub was in the act of launching on Pearl Harbor, part of an elaborate plot by the Russians to blame it on the Chinese, when the missile blew up in the tube. We'd go ape, nuke the Chinese, remove that threat to Russia......and part of the huge expense and unprecedented effort......no one had ever done such a heavy recovery from so deep before,,,,.was to find out just what that sub was doing out there the day it blew up and sank...

It raised part of a sunken russian submarine. It was built specifically for that purpose...after that it was layed up for years, finally purchased and now being used as a exploration vessel for the oil and gas industry.
