Right now every time I read the sports section of YAHOO! or the local newspaper I always see some headlines about the World Cup. There press seems to be giving as much attention to FIFA and the World Cup as I would normally see during the NFL's (aka "American" Football) regular season. Can anyone explain to me why the World Cup seems to be the prior focus of the press in America like it's never been before?

Please people, I am serious about this question (like I am with all of my questions), and if you don't know, don't answer.

There has been as upsurgence in popularity of the sport in the US as well as a large number of foreign born immigrants that still follow the sport. The media is merely providing a service (and make money in the process). The World Cup also falls on sort of an American sport dead zone, timing wise. Baseball is in mid-season, football hasn't yet started and basketball has finished it's season.

I was talking to someone and told them that the two teams that I'm upset are out of the tourney are the US and Mexico. Even though we are both US citizens, he did not understand why I would care. When I asked him why he didn't care about the US, his response was "why should I care when nobody else does."

I have a different perspective of things. I don't think I should care about only the popular things, but there are millions of US Americans that do follow the trends (that's why Notre Dame and Yankees are so popular). The media deals with international issues more than most jobs. They know that football is popular in almost every country and that the World Cup is the biggest sports event in the world. What the media is trying to do is make football seem like the cool thing to do, and sadly (for the reason, not the result) that will draw in tons of people. I think the more interest US Americans have in football, the more the sport will grow. Hopefully, we can turn MLS into a league that is as good as some of the mediocre football leagues in Europe (or S. America). I don't expect MLS to be at the level of the Italian, Spanish or English leagues, or even the German or French, but maybe at the level of some of the others.

I've been watching the World Cup from Germany, so I don't know a lot about what the US American papers are saying, but I think the publicity will be a good thing.

I assume it will have to be because the US national team was in this WC after reaching the quater finals the last time. They expected them to do very well this time because supposedly this was the best team they had ever had. This probably caused journalists to travel to Germany in an attempt to cover the games for US fans. I am assuming it has not died down since the US exited but that could be because a lot more Americans enjoy football now and the magazines and newspapers hope to sell to them by covering the games.

Hope this a good reasoning for you, I do not know if it is a fact.

I'd love to say its because the sport is gaining popularity but the truth probably comes a lot closer to the fact that there are no NFL games currently being played, the NBA Championships just ended, and the only other sport that's being televised is GOLF! Yuk!!

i think there is a shift in sports, as the whole world is focused on soccer, i think the usa press can not ignore that.
and all the immigrants to the country, are focused on the world cup, and people stay away from work and discuss the world cup. its tough to ignore that.
and technology, has also played its role.

The sport is gaining popularity, albeit slowly, in the US. It will not end up supplanting one of the other major sports, but slide into the menagerie that is the American sports scene - baseball, basketball, football, hockey, golf, tennis, soccer.

Well I think that more and more people in the US are starting to like soccer. And I think the press is trying to make even more people get into it.

And thanks for not getting negative about it. I dont know if you like soccer or not but a lot of people are like "world cup sucks, i hate soccer". And i appreciate you not doing that :P
