Have you seen File Types in Folder Options? (Under the Tools Menu in Explorer) Basically, whatever program views Internet Shortcuts, .htm, .html, .asp or .php files is your default program.
The easier way: head to the browser you want to use, visit it's "Preferences" page (or for Internet Explorer, the "Internet Options" Control Panel does the same) and do it there. (Read help once your there for specific instructions: this would largely depend on what browser you're trying to run. Look for something that mentions "Make _________ my default internet browser.")
Once that's done, when using any browser other than your preferred one, if it asks to become the default browser, answer "no."
(Some internet services, such as AOL and NetZero, don't give you a choice in default browsers: you can use Firefox, but you have to open it up yourself. IE opens everytime you dial in whether you like it or not.)

If you have internet explorer as your default and you don't have any other browser on your computer, goto http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ and download firefox. After installation it will ask you if you want to make it your default. select yes and it will be your default. Same with if you have to download the netscape browser.
If you currently have internet explorer and another browser on your computer and you want internet explorer to be your default; goto Tools>Internet Options>Programs> Select default browser.
If you want to make another browser (e.g. firefox) currently installed on your computer the default browser instead of internet explorer; goto Tools on the menu bar of that browser, select options or internet options and you should find a tab that will allow you to make that browser your default. For firefox it is on the general tab. Just click on the button that says "check now" and should see if firefox is default, if not select yes to make default
Hope this helps
