Depending on where you live, some over-the-counter cough medications contain very small amounts of opiates while others contain something called psuedo-ephedine (Like sudafed). This is the drug that used to be available over the counter as a weight loss drug. And sudafed is a prime component in the making of "Ice" or crystal meth.

Many cough medicines have ingredients that can cause drowsiness or 'spaciness', as you aptly call it. So it's not recommended to drive or operate heavy machinery after taking them.
If you have to take cough medicine in the middle of the day, try a none-drowsy formula like Dayquil.
Good luck!
