Do government officials (high-up ones, like senators, congressmen, governors, etc) ever get called for jury duty? Or do they get let off the hook because of the importance of their jobs?

Yes, they get called if they are registered voters and their names come up. Yes, they sometimes beg off because of their schedules. Also, many are rejected for juries because they are lawyers, and lawyers generally hate having other lawyers on their juries. It is not uncommon, though, for elected officials to serve on juries when called.

Until about 15 years ago, certain parts of the population were allowed to skip Jury Duty...such as Doctors, Police, Government Officials. Now they all can be called and they have been called.

President Bush got called to jury duty a couple of months ago. He did not serve because he does not live in county anymore.
He was also meeting with Prime Minister that day. The Judge excused him, he did not ask to be released from jury duty.

Yes, I recall Senator John Kerry was selected for jury duty within the past year. The case did not go to trial.

Sure they get called, but if I were a defendant, I wouldn't want most of those crooked dirtbags sitting on my jury. Well, except the liberal ones. They always do seem to sympathize with the villain, rather than the victim.
