He's definitely the biggest difference maker in the world cup for the last decade. The French won with him and lost without him in 2002.
Even in the late stages of his career, he continues to outplay the best in the world.
I don't know if he's better than Pele, but he's most certainly deserving of consideration for the all-time world cup team - the best 11 in the history of the cup.
And maybe, he is the best midfielder ever, full stop.

Zidane is the best for now, but other players have the chance to be the best when their teams wins the World Cup.
