emotional. Its a style of music and often refers to the people who listen to it and their style of dress.
Common misconception - although "emo" also tends to get used to refer to depressed people, people who cut themselves, people who are never happy, and people who complain about life alot, this is NOT the definition of emo. Thats like saying all blonds are busty blombshell airheads who wave pompoms and sleep with jocks. People just like the generalize they if one person of a group does something, that they all do.

EMO- is a music movement that became popular in the late 90's. It is the direct bastard off-spring of 80's punk rock.
Much like Gothic music spurned 'Goth' kids so does EMO.
Examples of EMO (all debatable) Alkaline Trio, Death Cab For Cutie, yadda-yadda-yadda
EMO has evolved beyond a musical style into a full blown FAD.
EMO in it's origin was short for EMOTIONAL. It was a style of Punk music that was more harmonic and dealt with more personal topics than it's big brother PUNK or step brother PUNK-CORE.

I guess it depends on context, because there seem to be several definitions:
"# a post-town, in the parish of COOLBANAGHER, barony of PORTNEHINCH, QUEEN'S county, and province of LEINSTER, 5 miles (E.) from Maryborough, and 34 3/4 (WSW) from Dublin, near the high road to Maryborough; containing 14 houses and 102 inhabitants. Here are the RC chapel (a neat building), a public school, and a constabulary police station. Adjoining the town is Emo park, formerly Dawson's Court, the splendid mansion of the Earl of Portarlington.-- See COOLBANAGHER.

# Emo (an abbreviation of "emotionally-driven Hardcore punk") is a term now broadly used to describe almost any form of guitar-driven alternative rock that expresses emotions beyond traditional punk's limited emotional palette of alienation and rage. It is also used to describe fans of this genre, most commonly teenagers. (e.g., emo kid). The actual term "emo" originated in the mid-1980s D.C. scene, with the band Rites of Spring, as well as bands such as Fugazi, Moss Icon, and Antioch Arrow. ...

# Emo is an Irish filling station chain, owned by DCC. It was created in 2000 when BP Amoco purchased the Burmah filling stations (along with the rest of Castrol). As BP had closed their Irish operations (selling them to Statoil), they had little interest in Burmahs Irish network, and it was purchased by DCC.

Emo means "Emotional" it is a style of attitude and music.
Emo music is usually like emotional rock ect.
The stereotyped emo cries all the time and self-harms...but notice that work "stereotyped" most are not like that.
You also get Emo Goths (emotional Goths) interested in the emo and gothic/grunge style.

Punk rock music that is what "complaint rock" used to be. Emotionaly, sometimes whiney, catering to young girls, and not typical of traditional punk (like The Ramones).
