you face it opposite from the doorway, like if it is walking in the house. It significance is as if the good luck is entering the home not leaving.

It does not matter which way you "face" them....any way ya want...they key is an elephanth with the trunk up is good luck...trunk down is bad luck...or so the story goes. I NEVER buy an elephant if the trunk is not up.

By the door, facing a window, in whatever room you want luck in, e.g. your bedroom, study, kitchen... That covers all the versions I've heard before.
