they think if they keep going extremely to the left, it will cause their original positions to then become middle, or moderate?

That has to be it. People can't really be as far out left as they appear to be.

For those of you asking who is moving left:

The democrats were not socialists 20 years ago.

I think it is because they want to appear so different from the conservatives in this country. Perhaps thinking that they are being progressive and patting themselves on the back for it. Who knows...most of the time it seems like they are just talking out their a** to hear themselves talk.

You might be onto something...kind of a neo-lib McCarthyism. Extremist liberals are dividing the country to make the current administration look bad and to make Bush look divisive. When, in reality, the extremist liberal left are the ones dividing us. If they agreed with the person who the majority elected into office, we wouldn't be divided. Not saying dissent doesn't have it's place, but modern liberalism is full blown divisiveness.

Their goal is to regain power by any means necessary, if that means making America look bad, then so be it. That's why their motto always has something to do with "a better way"...they never tell us what that way is, mind you. Their message is that America is on the wrong track and only they can correct it...taking right into socialism.

Give it a rest. Liberals look "left" because the hegemonic trend in the "conservative" movement makes Joseph Goebbels seem like a moderate.

It's almost painful to watch the party that warned against the "military-industrial" complex become the "big tent" for fat-cats, religious fanatics, "Southern Strategists," and the desecration of the constitution. (By the way. conservatism used to mean conserving the constitution, not some imagined set of cultural values from a "golden age" of Christianity.)

i agree with the first answer.

That American politics is a pendulum in constant flux.
one side pushes one way the other pushes in the opposite direction....

people seem to be far left only because the right has moved so far from the center, but it happens to both parites in cycles.

If you recall part of the reason Gore lost appeal was he seemed too moderate, Bush also presented himself as moderate, remember the Uniter not Divider mumbo jumbo.

Republican attack Gore and Clinton but they were not liberal, by any strecht (ie welfare reform)
I think the majority of the problem with this question will be how your defintion of terms differs from the real defintiions.

In earlier times the liberals were those who believed the world was round. Then later, liberals believed slavery was evil. Liberals opposed picking a fight with countries that had no intention of harming America. Unfortunately, liberal has become a bad word because on radio and in some of the media only one side of the question is ever explored.

As long as the conservatives continue to rob us of our constitutional liberties, you better hope the liberals will become more and more extreme to counterbalance the far right! IF not, you are going to wake up one day and find yourself with NO liberty, NO justice, and NO equality for all. The changes that have occurred in the past few years under this administration are more than scary....we are headed for a melt down of the constitution. And surely you are not as ignorant of this as your quesiton makes you sound. To sacrifice liberty in the pursuit of safety will leave you with neither!

No, it's just that the Republican party has moved so far to the right that Barry Goldwater now looks more like Abbie Hoffman by comparison.

And save the wise cracks -- I was a life-long Republican until about 5 years ago. 21 years of military service. Big fan of Ronald Reagan. I'm still trying to figure out how they f&cked up MY party so badly. :(

I feel they think if they move far enough to the left they will circle and appear to be on the right

Which liberals are moving to the extreme left and what have they said for you to think they are?

I'm really curious about this. I've seen this accusation made by many people on many different occasions and I have yet to see any justification for it being made.

It only seems extreme as to how far the conservatives are moving to the right. Eventually they will both meet somewhere
