1988 F150 Ford Lariat Truck, New battery and alternator. Elec fuel inject. over 1/2 tank of gas. Cranks over after a few tries but dies out. When cranking it sounds like it wants to catch but just can't. Doesn't sound 'watery' or like low battery or anything. Any ideas? Could it be the fuel filter or something clogged? Kinda stuck on ideas. Any help would be awesome.

3 things....fuel, air, spark

Do you have spark? Take out a spark plug and hold it against the metal engine. Have someone try to start it. does it spark?

is the fuel pump working? when you turn the key to acc., can you hear the little whine?

and finally, air- that's thru your injectors....that could be no good.

clogged fuel filter is a good place to start. could also be a ignition problem like the coil or an ignition module. the ignition is one good place check.
does the truck have some kind of anti theft device. Some Cars/truck with anti theft device will start then die if not reset or turned off.

Although these are all great answers in my 30 plus years of auto repair remember never to trust the gas gauge!!!! put a couple gallons of fuel in the tank before doing anything!
