Alright, this has a bit to do with perspective. The ant and ball analogy is flawed. You must think bigger. Imagine the world in space. Yeah, that big blueberry rolling around in space has gravity. If you don't believe me, read some textbooks, I'm sure that they'll back me up. Anyhow, the gravitational force of earth draws all things towards its core. The oceans and the sea of air that forms the atmosphere are drawn to this core. When you go down to earth, everything is still being drawn to the center, to you, it would be down. So now that we've got things pointing down, why do things stay up? It's just the way we've engineered them. We know that stuff goes down if you drop it, so we use this force to anchor our buildings to the earth, take away this force and our structures wouldn't fair so well.

have you not been paying attention in science class, GRAVITY, it pull everything toward center, and the center of the earth is below us reguardless where we stand on the earth, now think back to the old bugs bunny cartoon, if you could dig through the earth to the other side you would come out feet first, sence you were stand down in the hole, but gravity would keep you from going up once you reach the center, plus theres the problem of reaching moltem magma 25 miles down, and liquid iron 800 miles down
now when speaking 3dimentionaly, when in space there is no up or down, cuase there is no gravity holding you down

Gravity and the fact that the earth is really big. The fact that the horizon is flat-ist should give you a clue about the vastness of the globe that would "trick" people into thinking that even when they are upside down the are really right side up!

It's upright because our brain interprets it as upright no matter where in the world we are and that's because of gravity attracting us to the centre of the earth so that for everybody on earth down is towards the earth's centre and up is away from earth's centre.
