I'm reading :
Classic cult fiction: a companion to popular cult literature
Author: Whissen, Thomas R.
and
1001 books you must read before you die
I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions of books on books or suggestions of books that everyone seems to read (example: catcher in the rye, catch 22, the bell jar, etc)

Yes: Nancy Pearl's "Book Lust"--Recommended reading for every mood, moment and reason (some great ideas, off the common charts).

And one of my favorite writers, Pulitzer prize winner, Jane Smiley's "13 Ways of Looking at the Novel". She offers 100 novels with a sharp 2-3 page synopsis of each. Very good.

Try "So May Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading" by Sara Nelson. It doesn't exactly give you a list of books to read but does detail books read by her as well as talks about a person's love of reading in general. I thought it was great!
