*grits teeth* There may be a way for you to do this. KTM used to sell a version called ( I believe) a SMX, what it was is a Motocross bike that is set up for Supermoto, in other words, you got all the MX hardware (tires wheels and brakes) as well as the Supermoto hardware (again, tires wheels and brakes, but full street versions). If you could find one, there you go, but I'd take a little trip to 1) Your local State Trooper office to see if you can get it liscensed 2) to http://www.bajadesigns.com for the street legal stuff if #1 is a yes. Another thing you could do is get a Husqvarna. http://www.husqvarnausa.com/ Husky's TE250/450/510 (2006 models) as well as the SMR450/510 are all street legal. The TE's would be great for mostly riding dirt and the SMR's would be good for primarly street but should be able to get new wheels, tires and brakes if you want to hit the trails. In fact, the TE's are considered THE best dual purpose bikes out because they are great for the dirt. Kind of a win/win situation, but I'd try for the SMR's and get the wheels for the simple reason I know in WA that TE's sold out before they were here, but SMR's are on hand, and I believe the older versions of the SMR's are street legal as well so you could probably find a used one somewhere.

Dual purpose bike. But keep in mind that, although you can ride a duelly both on the highway and offroad, it isn't the best bike for either of those surfaces. If you can afford two bikes, then get separate ones for each purpose.

These are all good suggestions (except for the "get two bikes" nonsense), but I would strongly advise that you also take a rider safety class first. It will give you some good experience that could save your life down the road (heh).
Check out msf-usa.org for class locations near you. Many of the classes let you use their bikes to learn on (worth the tuition right there) and the instructors can help you decide on a good bike to start on.
Cheers, and happy riding.

Buell has recently introduced a great bike that is wonderful for touring and is a good cross bike or trail bike. It is called the Ulysses XB12X. I believe the Ulysses to be wonderful bike. It was reviewed in the March edition of thunder press and received great reviews there as well. Very comfortable ride and enjoys the trail as much as the open road. Typical Buell, an absolute blast to ride and as with any big bore v-twin, lots of power and excitement.
