I am currently on my 2nd semester at WGU, on-line university. I have not been in school for years and worried that I would not be able to keep up. This university offers terrific support, I have never felt alone in this endeavor. I have a great network of students for support - as well as access to teachers and mentors, they are always just an email away.
As far as advantages, I can go to school whenever I want, whatever works out best for my schedule. I can continue to work and still accomplish a ton of school work, by working when it is convenient to me. This also means that I can work ahead and finish sooner, if I so desire.
I don't have any travel expenses, other than to the local university for my finals, as I finish each class.
Financial aid as an on-line student is easy to obtain and completely covers all of my costs, including books.
The only disadvantage that I can see is that you have to be a REALLY strong writer. You are thoroughly tested with each assignment on your ability to communicate. If you don't have strong writing skills and cannot communicate your thoughts succinctly in writing, you are going to struggle.
I am absolutely thrilled with my experience as an on-line student, thus far. I am really looking forward to completing my degree on-line and becoming an elementary school teacher.
Hope that helps!

I just took some online classes for the first time since I am deployed, and I liked them. It all depends on the person. One of the classes I took was British literature from the 16th century, which I loathe more than any other type of lit. It was nice to take it online, because I know that it would have been one of those classes I would not go to all that often if I had to actually attend. The other class was American Drama, which I did very well in, but kind of wish it was in person because it was fun, and would have been a good class to talk to other people about more.
The saving time part is nice, and the convenience of not having set hours is nice as well.

Online classes have their advantages and disadvantages.
Some advantages:
-not having to travel to a campus
-being able to work from home
-sometimes having the ability to work at your own pace
Disadvantages:
-no face time with a professor
-group work is very difficult
-technology can be fussy
If you don't have the discipline to do work on your own and even learn at your own pace then online learning is not for you.

It depends on how disciplined you are. If you like to procrastinate (and who doesn't) you can have deadlines surprise you unawares.
Sometimes its harder to communicate with teachers and/or work with groups on projects. You don't really realize how much is communicated through body language and tone.
I've had great teachers with online classes. And I've had some horrible teachers with online classes. (Which is true of face-to-face meetings too).
But if you have a good internet connection and a reliable computer, online classes can be very good.

On one hand doing courses on-line saves time and you can go at your own speed. On the other hand you are on your own when it comes to help and guidelines on assignments and studying.
