I bathed my two cats and dog today and I noticed the cats had a few fleas, but my dog did not. My dog and cats are together all the time. When I asked why my dog didn't have any someone told me there are different types of fleas. One that only gets on cats and one that only gets on dogs. Is this true?

Not that I know. I however have seen flees develop a taste for a kind of hair. The longer the better they like it.

OK I was wrong:

Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis),
Dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis),
Human flea (Pulex irritans),
Northern rat flea (Nosopsyllus fasciatus),
Oriental rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis).

No fleas don't care who they bite....dogs, cats, squirrels, humans. They're just looking for a place to eat, then breed and lay eggs. Usually fleas just stay on an animal long enough to feed, then they'll jump off. If your dog and cats are inside the house, then you'll need to treat the house and where they go outside too. If not, just remember this...in a 30 day period, an adult female flea can lay over 250,000 eggs. It's easy for it to get out of hand. So handle it as soon as you can. Best of luck to you.

No they all get the same fleas, I have heard that if the fleas are getting enough from their host they will stay their and not spread to other animals. I have two cats one had fleas and the other did not.

No. Fleas are fleas. It is possible that your dog has just been lucky. You should still treat ALL your animals with flea prevention therapy, i.e. collars, shampoos, etc.
