You CAN do so safely IF:
- you use a water-based paint that will wear off on its own after a while, and it would not cause problems on human skin
- you do not paint the entire shell. It is best to avoid covering an entire scale on the shell even!

Paint can damage a turtle by distorting the growth of the shell or letting chemicals be absorbed into the turtle. Avoid these and it is not a real health issue.

SHOULD you do it? I don't think so:
- turtles are gorgeous as they are
- turtle lovers would not want to do something that might stress the turtle
- you probably would not use a temporary color spray on a dog, why paint a turtle?

I would say no would you were paint on your skin the shell may be hard but it will absorb what ever is on the shell. You will make it sick. I also think even if the paint was non toxic. The shell is a living breathing piece of the turtle I do not think it is wise the best sorce is call a vet to be sure a call does not cost anything. So if you care about the turtle call.

Should you paint a turtle shell? I must ask why do you want to paint a turtle shell? Would you paint any other animal?

If you want to identify it, no problem, but don't paint it for a whim. It's cruel.

Many breeders mark the shell with nailpolish to indentify hatchlings. Often numbers are put on and they will last a few months, slowly wearing off.

Hell no! If you want to paint things get a tattoo of your turtle. It won't hurt you, but paint can be toxic to turtles.

no way even a non toxic paint or water paint still is not good for them.. if they were meant to be painted they would be born that way..

If they were meant to be painted they already would be! Same for docked tails & cropped ears on dogs!
