I wish I knew for sure myself. I've been clean for two years but when I get into situations that I would have normally used in, the first thing in my mind is drugs. I'm afraid I'll always be an addict even if I never use again. There is a spirit that feeds on my weakness because if I go back to using then I'm right where he wants me.A prisoner of my own self destruction.

Because drugs like cocaine release endorphins in your brain. Endorphins is like a chemical that makes you feel happy, only when you receive a hell of alot more endorphins from drugs than you do naturally, so you feel extremely happy. This is the best feeling you've ever had and once the high goes away (usually about 20-30 minutes later) you experience a "crash" and feel extremely depressed. Addicts want to get that feeling of euphoria again and again and again. Hence...addiction.

I was given Demerol for pain in the hospital once, and although it was only given to me once, I was CRAVING the crap for a MONTH AFTER. And it's solely because it STAYS in your BODY for a LONG LONG TIME AFTER! So, to answer your question, half of quitting addictions is the body dependency to the drug.

The mental recovery is sometimes much more difficult than the physical recovery. Especially if the addict has no friends or family who do not use.
