What do the vests that the players on the side lines ware represent?

I think it's for not getting the active players on the field with the ones on the side confused. help for the ref so he knows who's supposed to be on the field and who's not.

just a guess though...please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does not represent anything but just to differentiate field player and bench players.
