I used to work for Directory Inquiries (the old '192' in UK) - and any numbers that were ex-directory showed in the search field as 'XD'....so if they are 'unlisted' they really ARE unlisted!
Course, if they ARE your friends, and you DO have their address - write and ask them to give you their phone number!
Honestly, it's not rocket science!!
Thanks for the 2 - won't be holding my breath for the 10

It just depends on why they became private. The old number is not good any longer then. Is there a reason why they wouldn't want anyone to have it?, or just certain people? Unless it's an emergency, the phone company can't release it and even then I don't know if they could to just anyone.
