King is the title reserved for the ruling monarch. When a woman takes the throne, she becomes Queen, only because that is the only word they have for the female equivalent to King. Queen, when it refers to the King's wife, is only a courtesty title. Queen Elizabeth's mother, who was also Queen Elizabeth, was only called that because she was married to the King. She was not known as Queen Elizabeth II because she wasn't the reigning monarch. When the current Queen came to the throne as the reigning monarch, she WAS known as Elizabeth II.
When a king dies, his wife doesn't take over the throne, it passes in a direct line to his oldest son. If there is no oldest son, it passes to his next brother. The only time it slips away from this routine is if there is no brother or son. Then, and only then, can it pass to a female.
In the case of the current monarch, her uncle, Edward VII, abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson. That meant his brother took the throne and became George VI. When George VI died, he had no surviving brothers, and no sons, so his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, took the throne.
Today, Elizabeth and Philip have four children, Charles, Andrew, Edward and Anne. Charles is the Heir Apparent. In the event that something happens to Charles, the throne would pass to his oldest son, William. If something happened to William before he married and had children, the throne would to go Harry. Andrew, Edward and Anne will never get near the throne.

If a prince becomes a King, his wife automatically becomes a Queen. It doesn't work the other way round - that's why he is only a Prince. Unlike the wife of a British monarch, there is no corresponding role for the husband of a reigning Queen.
The Queen Elisabeth II created the Duke of Edinburgh a Prince of the United Kingdom in 1957, to correct the error that Philip had been made a Duke and given the style of His Royal Highness, but not made a Prince.

No, only a king's wife is automatically queen. A queen's husband is the prince consort. Royalty just works that way. Prince Philip is Greek; he was never part of the royal line of succession in England.

King is technically a higher ranking than Queen.England's ruling monarch is a Queen;there can be no one of higher ranking than the ruling monarch.
Diana would have been Queen Consort;that is the title of the reigning male monarch's wife. She would have had no powers to rule.
Phillip is Prince Consort;that is the highest ranking a husband of a reigning monarch can have.He also has no powers to rule.

Because he is male and not by blood a member of the royal house of Windsor. Mostly to keep any of his relatives from getting any ideas about getting part of the throne.
