To build one above ground you can use either cement blocks for a square one or build a circular pond with rocks and cement. The ones I have seen are about 4' high. Line it with a couple layers of heavy duty plastic. Get a couple large plastic tubs to put the filter pumps in. Add some water plants and koi. One of these ponds had to be covered with wire mesh because a heron began to eat the koi. I have seen some large shallow in-ground ones also, about 2' deep, with little bridges over them, done the same way with the plastic liners and filters. The fish didn't seem to mind the shallow water. If you put a fountain in your pond, it makes it so nice to sit outside and listen to it.

You can buy a kit with liner and pump at Lowes or Home Depot at a reasonable price. Comets are much better priced than Koi and just as pretty. Less of a loss if cats or herons visit your pond. Start off using algae control products and with at least a 60 % covering of plants or you will soon have a green murky pond and won't be able to see the fish. Building a pond is easy, achieving a natural balance in your environment is the hard part. Try putting it in the shade for better algae control, and make sure it is no less that 2 feet deep so the water temp is cool enough.
