Some reputable companies advertise in this way but most of them are not at all reputable.
Some ads pay per click, so every time someone clicks on a link the host gets paid.
Some pay per month.
Some sites are free for the first 50 uploads then after that you have to pay.
You always get limited space and bandwidth, so they can cram loads of sites on to one server. If you get fed up with your site being offline for half the month because its too popular, you either change hosts or pay to upgrade.
I don't know nything about business models.

Advertisment, If your page gets a million views a day, thats mad exposure for a product of any tyype. People will pay through the nose for great advertising places and spots. Ex. The superboewl.

People and businesses pay to advertise on these websites because they know the magic word "free" means they'll likely be seen by thousands of people.

they made money with ads and when you go to that web site always they have pop up ads our sth atracttive if you press these ads the company pay them money

most of them make money by advertising products or adding links to places you may sign up for by paying.Most companies will pay them to place such links to their stuff.
