Is there ANYTHING I can do via software without sending it out to a lab???

go to the manufacturers website. there you should be able to download utilities that will help you find out exactly what is wrong. there should also be a program that will delete and reformat the disk. unfortunately with that option all of you data will be lost. If all else fails, call the manufacturer and tell them it is bad. almost all of them will overnight you a new one even before you send out the old one. they will also try to save any info that you may want off the bad disk

You can run chkdsk on the drive in question. It will either fix the bad sectors if it can or mark them as used so no more data will be written to those sectors.

Go to the Command Prompt and type (for example if your drive is D) chkdsk d:

you can Partition the hard drive and hope that you isolate the problem or you might have to buy a new hard drive.
