i agree with you.... everybody wants to give a medal to the soldiers, and they do deseve it, but when they do something horrible like that, every wants to run to their defense like the iraqi citizens deserved it... if they were to do it here, then to us, that would be a different story, but its ok if we do it over there? why is that?

It's a difficult thing because no one wants to rush to judgement when there are troops invovled. I think the united states is a waring nation and part of that involves training troops to war. All throughout history rape has been a part of war and the challenge for us now is to punish that trend rather then avoid it or reward it. It's impossible to stick soliders in a war zone and expet them not to act like they are at war and some will get a sense of entitlement. A lot of references to Bosnia are made but it happens throughout history and in other places. I'm not saying that it's an intended method of torment applied by those in power but it is a reality of war. What makes this case worse is the soliders are accused by members of their own regiment. One turning himself in after the torture and murder of two soliders from the 502 regiment. There are witnesses to the week long planning and the return of the soliders afterwards with blood on their clothing. The investigation is pending but this story has American soliders saying 5 of there own were involved. I'm certain the military will respond. When something like this happens it reflects poorly on the entire military and the nation. This was not a military tatic it was a group of soliders trained to kill and occupy losing site of how important their conduct is in the message of liberation. Since we haven't learned from history how ambigiously defined military actions called wars are not the best choices maybe we can learn that tolerating are promating rape as an acceptable form of warfare says more about our humanity then the victems. If we can't stop this our message of liberater is ineffective. We can't as a humanitarian effort build churches while raping the women, killing their families, a child and then burning the victems body. It's impossible to "win hearts and minds" with this covert behavior happening, it says someting to them about how the military governs itself. It's like running 7 miles a day for heart and lung health then smoking 5 packs a day. It's self defeating the military knows this and I do believe they are sincere in most cases but the there is a mentality of soliders at war and it's seen in this situation we need not to tolerate it.
Don't make excuses this is not a case of inner city crime this is a case of soliders in the United States military taking license with their position and the posistion of the country. If we tolerate this kind of conduct we become the terrorists we become the oppressive military war machine hostile to those we claim to be protecting. It's possible if we can assess the true damage of war on us as American's and for the countries we occupy we can better discern if the prices is worth the cost. The expense is more then money and lives it's much deeper. It's widows, fatherless/motherless children. It's a hatred for Americans bred into other nations whom we occupy.

It might help to have a link to provide the facts to get an honest opinion..
Here it is for you..
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/02/24/iraq/main541815.shtml
My opinion.. battle stress has the ability to turn heroes into hopeless shadows of the humans they once were.. if it is found to be an accurate account of the events, I am sure they will be dealt with accordingly..
There is no place in civilized society for these type of actions.. but the untold story is that crime in general is very widespread in Iraq.. Iraqi's are killing and raping and mutilating fellow Iraqi's on a daily basis.. Just like Americans are douing to fellow Americans..
It is crime.. it happens. It is inexcusable.. and it will continue despite our greatest collective efforets to containg the destruction we bring on ourselves..
That doesn't make it right.. nothing will.. I don't condone premeditated violence.
I am just hoping to bring a little understanding into the discussion

I have not heard where they had planned it for a week, and I will not even say it happened as it has not yet been proven.
What I have heard though is that two soldiers claim to have witnessed it and therefore turned in the ones who did it. If it happened then they deserve to be punished to the fullest extent.
BUT, to call our troops that are risking their lives animals is sick. This kind of thing happens on the streets more than anything else, yet you wouldn't classify yourself as an animal because it happened in your city now would you?

This is an awful thing. Rape is as much an act of violence as killing her family. I would say it was stress but rape is not done by people who are stressed. I do think that unfortunately the military doesn't necessarily screen for these kind of people. Lots of our soldiers over there are reservists who never thought they'd go to war. I think they need to be punished. because it doesn't matter who they raped or killed, what they did was WRONG

Some people have nothing to do but criticise our own military servicemen. What's with all the bad news? Why not support the people risking their lives for your pittieful ass.
